People have been predicting the end of the world almost from its very beginning, so it’s only natural to be sceptical when a new date is set for Judgement Day. This time, though, the armies of Good and Evil really do appear to be massing. The Four Bikers of the Apocalypse are hitting the road. But both angels and demons- well, one fast-living demon and a somewhat fussy angel- would quite like the Rapture not to happen.
Oh, and someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist…”
And how good does that sound for a story? Incredible, right? Well, if you are that kind of person who doesn’t like spooky stuff, don’t worry. You can read this book. It’s anything but spooky. In fact, it’s really funny.

And I hope I convinced you with these feedbacks from some “big guys” like those above.
1) Reading this book from a reader’s point of view:
“Good Omens” is on my top 10 favourite books and there are thousands of reasons why it ended up there. I learned from it that even good people can do bad things. But also, even bad people can do good things. And as an example, we have Aziraphale (the most important angel in the story) and Crowley (the most important demon in the story). These two are, of course, Enemies.
Quote: “But they were Enemies for more than 6000 years. Which made them sort of friends.”
It goes like this: both of them are sent on Earth and their job is some sort of a Godly/ Satanical (whatever the case) Human Resources Recruiter. This meaning: Aziraphale blesses people and makes miracles and good deeds etc. While Crowley is “living la vida loca” and does whatever he wants to and, sometimes, he tempts people, securing souls for his Master, only to be able to tell his superiors that he’s not useless and should be left on Earth some more. Oh, and by the way, did I mention that Aziraphale is a book lover and a part-time rare book dealer? Of course, he doesn’t exatcly sell books, but he needed some storage place for his treasures, which is why he decided to open a bookshop.
As about the Antichrist, I’m not going to tell you too much about this, except that the job got a bit… messed up. It suffices to say that two Dukes of Hell gave Him to Crowley, who had to take Him to a hospital run by Satanist nouns and they manged to deliver “The Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of this World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness” to the wrong family. And this is where the big fun starts…
I’m pretty sure that you’ll find some things in here with which you have to agree, only because you have no good con for it. For example, the authors speak about Crowley’s opinion on people a few times and you have to say that he’s got a point.
Quote: “Oh, he did his best to make their short lives miserable, but nothing he could think up was half as bad as the stuff people thought up themselves. […] There had been times, over the past millennium, when Crowley felt like sending a message back Below saying ‘Look, we might as well shut down Dis and Pandemonium and everywhere and move up here, there’s nothing we can do to them that they don’t do themselves and they do things we never even thought of.”
If you didn’t already find enough reasons to read this book, then let me add one last thing.
Quote: “God does not play dice with the Universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of the other players (everybody), to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won’t tell you the rules and who smiles all the time.”
P.S.: If any of the aforementioned things made you read the book, then you also should give the movie series (of only 6 episodes) a try. Believe me, you won’t regret it.
2) Reading this book from a writer’s point of view:
Ah… My favourite part! Where I have to explain what I learned from Terry and Neil… Gosh, I’ve got too many things to say! But I’ll try to limit myself a little bit.
First things first, do you remember what I said in my previous review of “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak about the importance of jokes? (If you didn’t read it, go do it after you read this one.) Well, let me tell you that this book is literally full of them. (By the way, I advise you to never drink something while reading it. I did this, and it was an almost fatal mistake, since I choked from laughter). Actually, there’s this interview with the writers, a short amount of time after publishing “Good Omens”, when they said that while they were writing the book, they only tried to make each other laugh. Also, there had been some complications in the process of writing something, since Neil is another kind of human species and is a nocturnal creature, while Terry had a normal sleep schedule. But in spite of this, these guys did a really good job.
Secondly, in order to make a great story, you need well defined characters, each of them having different personalities (for the reader to recognise them easier) and to give each of them something personal like some characteristics out of common, a weird routine, a crazy way to dress etc. (to “plant” the respective character in the reader’s mind). For example: “When meeting Aziraphale, many people formed three impressions: that he was English, that he was intelligent, and that he was gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide. The first two were true.” So how can you not remember such a character?
Then, you need a captivating plot. With side plots. The main plot here is the attempt of Crowley and Aziraphale to stop the world from ending. The side plots are, basically, the life of the other characters important to the story before, and during the Armageddon. As a writer, you need to take into consideration that not only your main character is important in the story and not everyone’s lives have to spin around the main character’s life. Everybody has their own lives and problems. You can use that to create a really good side plot, if you are creative enough to value your resources.

RO: “Good Omens” de Terry Pratchett și Neil Gaiman

SINOPSIS (un mic rezumat al cărții):
“Judecând după ,,Frumoasele și corectele profeții ale lui Agnes Nutter, vrăjitoare“- singurul ghid către viitor de încredere din lume, scris în 1655, înainte ca autoarea să explodeze- lumea se va sfârși într-o zi de sâmbătă. Sâmbăta următoare, de fapt… Exact după ceai.
Oamenii au tot scris profeții cu privire la sfârșitul lumii, aproape chiar de la începutul acesteia, așa că e natural să fii sceptic atunci când e setată o nouă dată pentru Judecata de Apoi. De data aceasta, totuși, armatele Binelui și Răului chiar par să se amestece. Cei Patru Motocicliști ai Apocalipsei apar și ei în peisaj. Însă deopotrivă îngeri și demoni- ei bine, un demon obsedat de adrenalină și un înger oarecum fițos- ar fi foarte încântați dacă Ruptura să nu s-ar produce.
Oh, și se pare că cineva a pus Anticristul în locul greșit…”
Cât de bine sună asta pentru o poveste? Incredibil, nu? Și totuși, dacă ești genul de persoană căreia nu-i plac lucrurile înspăimântătoare, nu te îngrijora. Poți citi cartea aceasta. E oricum altcumva, numai nu înspăimântătoare. De fapt, e chiar foarte amuzantă.

Și sper că v-am convins cu aceste feedback-uri date de băieții ăștia mari.
1) Citind această carte din punctul de vedere al unui cititor:
“Good Omens” este în top 10 cele mai bune cărți citite vreodată de mine și există mii de motive pentru care a ajuns în acest top. Am învățat din această carte că până și oamenii buni pot face lucruri rele. Dar, de asemenea, oamenii răi pot face lucruri bune. Iar drept exemplu îi avem pe Aziraphale (cel mai important înger din poveste) și pe Crowley (cel mai important demon din poveste). Cei doi sunt, bineînțeles, Dușmani.
Citat: “Dar erau Dușmani de mai mult de 6000 de ani. Iar asta îi transformase într-un fel de prieteni.”
Lucrurile funcționează în felul următor: amândoi sunt trimiși pe Pământ, iar fiecare dintre ei este un fel de Recrutor de Resurse Umane Dumnezeisc/ Satanic (după caz). Asta însemnând că: Aziraphale binecuvântează oameni, face miracole, fapte bune etc. În timp ce Crowley își trăiește viața la maximum, face fix ce vrea, iar, câteodată, ispitește oameni, asigurând suflete pentru Stăpânul său; dar asta numai ca să le poată spune superiorilor săi că nu-i nefolositor și că ar mai trebui lăsat pe Pământ ceva timp în plus. Oh, apropo, am spus că Aziraphale e un iubitor de cărți și că e un dealer part-time de cărți rare? Desigur, el nu prea vinde cărți, dar avea nevoie de un spațiu de depozitare pentru comorile sale, motiv pentru care decide să-și deschidă un anticariat.
Cât despre Anticrist… Nu o să-ți spun prea multe despre asta, în afară de faptul că treaba s-a cam… încurcat puțin. E de ajuns să spun că doi Duci ai Iadului i L-au dat lui Crowley, care a trebuit să-l ducă într-un spital condus de niște călugărițe Sataniste, care au reușit să livreze “Adversarul, Distrugătorul Regilor, Îngerul Răului Fără Fund, Marea Bestie care este numită Dragon, Prințul Lumii acesteia, Părinte al Minciunilor, Odraslă a Satanei, și Lord al Întunericului” familiei greșite. Și aici începe marea distracție...
Sunt destul de sigură că aici vei găsi câteva lucruri cu care va trebui să fii de acord, iar asta doar fiindcă nu vei avea argumente prea bune împotriva lor. De exemplu, autorii expun expun opinia lui Crowley despre oameni de câteva ori și ești nevoit să accepți că are dreptate.
Citat: “Oh, își dădea toată silința să le facă viețile scurte să fie chinuitoare, dar niciuna dintre ideile lui nu păreau măcar pe jumătate la fel de rele ca acelea pe care ei le aveau. […] Au fost vremuri, pe parcursul ultimului mileniu, în care Crowley s-a gândit să trimită un mesaj înapoi Dedesubt în care să spună ‘Uite, am putea foarte bine să închidem Dis și Pandemonium și să ne mutăm aici, sus, nu e nimic din ce le-am putea face noi, ce ei să nu-și fi făcut deja singuri, iar ei fac chestii care nouă nici nu ne-au trecut prin cap.”
Și dacă încă nu ți-am dat motive destul de bune pentru care să citești cartea asta, atunci lasă-mă să mai adaug un ultim lucru.
Citat: “Dumnezeu nu se joacă zaruri cu Universul; ci, mai degrabă, un joc inefabil conceput chiar de El, ce ar putea fi comparat, din perspectiva celorlalți jucători (toată lumea), cu a fi implicat într-o obscură și complexă versiune a unui joc de Poker într-o cameră unde e întuneric beznă, se joacă cu cărți goale, cu mize infinite, și un Dealer care nu-ți va spune regulile și care zâmbește tot timpul.”
P.S.: Dacă vreunul dintre lucrurile mai sus menționate te-a făcut să citești cartea, atunci ar trebui să încerci să te uiți și la serial (care are doar 6 episoade). Crede-mă, nu vei regreta.
2) Citind această carte din punctul de vedere al unui scriitor:
Ah… partea mea preferată! Unde trebuie să explic ce am învățat de la Terry și Neil… Dumnezeule, aș avea prea multe de spus! Dar voi încerca să mă limitez puțin.
Mai întâi, îți mai amintești ce am spus în review-ul trecut al cărții “Hoțul de Cărți” al lui Markus Zusak despre importanța glumelor? (Dacă nu ai citit acel review, atunci aruncă-ți un ochi pe acolo după ce-l termini pe acesta.) Ei bine, trebuie să-ți spun că această carte este literalmente plină de ele. (Apropo, te sfătuiesc să nu bei niciodată ceva în timpul lecturii acestei cărți. Eu am făcut asta și a fost o greșeală aproape fatală, dat fiind că mă înecasem de râs.) De fapt, autorii au spus într-un interviu, la puțin timp după publicarea cărții “Good Omens” că în timp ce scriau, ei nu încercau decât să-l facă pe celălalt să râdă. De asemenea, au avut loc ceva complicații în acest proces de scriere, având în vedere că Neil e un alt fel de specie umană, care este o creatură nocturnă, pe când Terry avea un program de somn normal. Însă în ciuda acestui lucru, băieții ăștia au făcut o treabă chiar foarte bună.
În al doilea rând, pentru a face o poveste grozavă, ai nevoie de personaje bine definite, fiecare având o personalitate diferită (pentru ca cititorul să le poată recunoaște și deosebi mai ușor) și să-i oferi fiecărui personaj ceva personal, doar al lui, cum ar fi o caracteristică ieșită din comun, o rutină bizară, un stil vestimentar nebunesc etc (pentru a “planta” personajul respectiv în mintea cititorului). De exemplu: “Cunoscându-l pe Aziraphale, mulți oameni își formau trei impresii: că era englez, că era inteligent și că era mai gay decât un copac plin cu maimuțe pe oxid de nitrogen. Primele două erau adevărate.” Cum ai putea să nu îți amintești un astfel de personaj?
Pe urmă, ai nevoie de un plan narativ captivant. Cu altele ce se desfășoară pe lângă conflictul principal. Aici, acest conflict principal, este încercarea lui Aziraphale și a lui Crowley de a opri sfârșitul lumii. Iar planurile narative de pe lângă, sunt reprezentate de viețile celorlalte personaje importante în poveste, înainte, cât și în timpul Armageddon-ului. Ca scriitor, e nevoie să iei în considerare că nu numai personajul principal e important, iar viețile tuturor celorlalte personaje nu trebuie să graviteze în jurul acestuia. Toată lumea are o viață personală și propriile probleme. Iar tu poți folosi asta pentru a crea planuri narative chiar bune, dacă ești suficient de creativ/(ă) încât să-ți valorifici toate resursele.
